What is the San Diego East African Youth
Organization (SDEAYO)? |
This organization was formed to provide an opportunity for
East African teenagers, between 13 and 18 years of age, to come
together in a safe environment to work on civic and cultural
events. In less than two years, over 500 East African youths
have participated in SDEAYO events. These groups come from
different ethnic groups and from different parts of San Diego,
namely East San Diego, Southeastern San Diego, National City and El Cajon City.
 |
Who runs the San Diego East African
Youth Organization? |
The
young adults who participate in the organization will elect a
Youth Executive Board. All decisions will be made by the youth
through their board, with adult advisors from the San Diego
Police Department and the East African Advisory Board
Committees. The Youth Executive Board will meet once a month to make
plans and discuss issues for the general meeting.
 |
Where and when do
members meet? |
The SDEAYO meets at the San Diego Police Department's
Multi-Cultural Community Relations Office located at 5834
University Ave #100. Meetings are held once a month, usually on
the last Thursday of the month at 4:30 pm. The meetings generally
last for one hour.
 |
Who supports the SDEAYO? |
The members are responsible for their own fundraising by
working at cultural events, selling food, car washes, selling
T-shirts and other activities.
 |
What are the youth activities? |
The youth have decided that they would like to participate in
sports, such as basketball, soccer, bowling, flag football and
other related activities (such as Magic Mountain,
Disneyland, Universal Studios), and work at the various cultural
events and holiday celebrations.
 |
How do I become a member? |
To become a member of SDEAYO you must be at least 13 years of
age, come to three meetings in a row and work one event. You
must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver form.
 |
Is there a membership fee? |
No fees are required to become a member.
 |
What happens when I turn 19 years old?
May I still participate with SDEAYO? |
Yes, you may. For young adults who want to participate you
may become a Senior youth advisor until age twenty-one. |
